On December 9 and 10, our community came together to raise awareness about the devastating environmental and human impacts of toxic tailings. Indigenous community members, allies, environmental organizations (including us!), and university faculty joined forces to call for accountability and immediate action from government and industry leaders.

The event began with an information table on the main level of the University of Alberta’s Student Union Building. From 10 AM to 2 PM each day, students and visitors stopped by to learn about the long-term consequences of toxic tailings on water, ecosystems, and human health.

The highlight of the event was the December 10 press conference, held on the second level of the Student Union Building at noon. Community leaders and experts spoke powerfully about the decades of neglect that have exacerbated the crisis.

These two days were a step toward fostering greater awareness and mobilizing collective action. By coming together, we’re amplifying the voices of those most affected and advocating for a future where water, land, and communities are protected.

The fight doesn’t stop here. Let’s keep pushing for accountability and solutions that prioritize environmental and human well-being. Together, we can turn the tide on decades of environmental neglect.
