Students, Faculty, Staff and Alumni
Coming together.
In February 2020, 65 faculty, students, post-docs, staff members, and academic teaching staff answered a call to form a climate action coalition at the University of Alberta. Reflecting the general concern across campus about the need for stronger, more focused collaboration on climate change responses, individuals came together from eight campuses and schools.
Our members have connections to other groups at the university or in our community, including: the Arts Environmental Studies Consortium, Speculative Energy Futures/Feminist Energy Futures, Extinction Rebellion Edmonton, Animal Rebellion, Nation Rising Alberta, Climate Justice Edmonton, Banking on a Better Future, Edmonton Youth for Climate, the Canadian Association of Nurses for the Environment, and the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment.
The COVID-19 pandemic and the radical restructuring at Ualberta following severe budget cuts have been setbacks, but the CAUA now has more than 120 members and an affiliate group, UA Students for Climate Advocacy.
We are building momentum.
Meet the 2023-2025 Coordinating Committee
We believe
that it is incumbent upon the University of Alberta, as a public institution mandated to serve the public good, to acknowledge that we are living through a global climate emergency, and to marshal all of its available resources to respond to this crisis, in collaboration with our communities. The university must work with Alberta’s civil society to develop pathways to an ecologically sustainable future–one that allows biodiversity to flourish and all citizens to live secure and fulfilling lives.
Our Mission
Educate : We believe in the power of knowledge. Through workshops, seminars, and educational campaigns, we strive to raise awareness about climate change, sustainability, and the importance of collective action.
Advocate : CAUA is committed to advocating for policies and practices that promote environmental sustainability. We engage with policymakers, collaborate with like-minded organizations, and work towards fostering a green campus culture.
Organize : Join us in making a difference. We organize events, projects, and initiatives that empower our community to take meaningful steps towards a better tomorrow. Whether it's tree planting, waste reduction drives, or community clean-ups, we are actively involved in creating tangible change.
